Guide 01/ How To Setup On-Chain Kusama & Polkadot Account
This article explains how to create Polkadot or Kusama account on-chain, not via exchange.
Browser Extension
The browser extension “Polkadot{.js}” is official application and provides a great balance of security and usability. It includes a secure offline mechanism to generate your account and interact with the network in the native way. The extension — Polkadot.{js} — is used for Polkadot and Kusama networks.
It’s available for both Google Chrome and FireFox. After installing, you should see the orange and white Polkadot{.js} logo in the menu bar of your browser.
Create Account
Open the browser extension by clicking the logo on the top bar of your browser. You will see a browser popup, not unlike the one below.
Click the big plus button and select “Create new account”. The Polkadot{.js} plugin will then use system randomness to generate a new seed for you and display it to you in the form of twelve words.
Please write down (or otherwise back up) these twelve words. You cannot retrieve the twelve words after the account creation is complete.
It is important to store the seed somewhere safe, secret, and secure. If you cannot access your account via Polkadot{.js} for any reason (e.g. using different computer), you need to re-enter your pre-existing seed. Failing to do so could result in irreversible loss of funds.
The network is your selection of currency you would like to create the account. You can use the same address on multiple chains, however, for privacy reasons, we recommend creating a new address for each chain you’re using. We select “Kusama Relay Chain”.
The account name is only for you. It is not stored on the blockchain and it’s not visible to other users. It helps to make as descriptive as needed, especially if you are having multiple accounts.
The password will be used sign any transactions or activity on blockchain — such as staking. It behaves as “pin” to your mobile banking.
Note that this password does NOT protect your seed phrase. As with pin to your mobile banking — if someone has your primary credentials, they still have control over your account even if they do not know the password.
Click on the “Add the account with the generated seed” and you are done.
Well done, you have your account.

Your account is now ready and could be accessed via https://polkadot.js.org/apps/#/accounts . You are now ready to start exploring the Kusama and Polkadot world.
